絵画の修士号を取得後、2011年に渡米したトマノヴァは、現地で生活する中で感じた居場所のなさを解消する手段として、写真を使うようになった。この米国滞在中、困難な状況に陥ったとき、彼女は心の中で故郷を追体験し、理想化したため、2018年の冬に実際にチェコに戻ったとき、故郷にいる自分自身に深い混乱と葛藤を覚えることになったのです。この離れている間に、彼女は自分が異質な存在になったと感じ、それでも自分は所属しているのだと思ったのです。故郷でありながら、ニューヨークもそうだった。ジョン・バーガーは、"移住することは常に世界の中心を解体することであり、そうして失われた、断片的なものに移行することである"と書いています。 It Was Once My Universeは、そのことについての作品です。矛盾した感情や方向感覚の喪失についてです。そして家、家族、記憶、距離、時間について。
